Series II of the New Liszt Edition contains Liszt’s free arrangements and transcriptions for the piano. Volume 14 includes pieces based on works by Händel, Ferdinand Huber, Verdi, Dargomyzhsky, Eduard Lassen, Saint-Saens, Massenet, and Géza Zichy. After losing his right arm in an accident, with his friend Liszt’s encouragement Count Géza Zichy published his studies for the left hand, and he dedicated them to the great composer. In a letter of thanks Liszt expressed his gratitude, and attached his version of the studies, arranged for two hands. Another piece with a Hungarian connection is the work Revive Szegedin!. The basis for this was a piece by Massenet that was itself an arrangement: Massenet orchestrated a march by the amateur composer Ignác Frank Szabadi for a concert in Paris in aid of the victims of the flood in the town of Szeged in 1879. Liszt was one of the people invited to the concert, and he responded with the manuscript of Revive Szegedin!. The extent to which Liszt followed the structure of the original works and how much of his own material he added varies from piece to piece.

Volume 30 of the New Liszt Edition is made up almost entirely of transcriptions of Schubert Lieder for solo piano. The volume starts with Die Rose, Liszt’s first, earliest song transcription, followed by Lob der Tränen, then the series of 12 Lieder selected by Liszt: 1. Sei mir gegrüsst, 2. Auf dem Wasser zu singen, 3. Du bist die Ruh, 4. Erlkönig, 5. Meeresstille, 6. Die junge Nonne, 7. Frühlingsglaube, 8. Gretchen am Spinnrade, 9. Ständchen von Shakespeare, 10. Rastlose Liebe, 11. Der Wanderer, 12. Ave Maria. The volume concludes with a transcription of the overture to Rossini’s Guillaume Tell.

Volume 24 of series II of the New Liszt Edition contains transcriptions faithful to the scores of works by Bach, Beethoven, Ferdinand David, Eduard Lassen, Mozart, Robert and Clara Schumann, and Wagner. In addition to piano versions of the Bach Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, Beethoven’s song cycle An die ferne Geliebte, two excerpts from the sequences Confutatis maledictis and Lacrymosa of Mozart’s Requiem, songs by Robert and Clara Schumann, and Isoldes Liebestod from Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, which are frequently programmed in concerts, two less well known works deserve attention: Ferdinand David’s series of character pieces originally for violin and piano, Bunte Reihe, and a piano transcription of Eduard Lassen’s orchestral Intermezzo (Symphonisches Zwischenspiel).

The composition of the pieces in Années de pelerinage, can be linked to Liszt’s journey to Italy in 1837-39. Italian art had a great influence on Liszt, and compositions in the volume are inspired by works of Raphael, Michelangelo, Petrarca, and Dante. The complete series was published in 1858. Later, in 1861, Liszt supplemented this with an appendix that contains the series of three pieces entitled Venezia e Napoli (this volume also gives the first version of these works).As customary, there are two versions of the publication: a blue clothbound edition and a grey softcover edition. The preface, which gives the most important information on the contents and technical details, is identical in both versions, but only the former includes an English description of the sources and a critical commentary. Both versions include facsimiles of pages from Liszt’s original autograph manuscript.
