  • Mozart – Horn Quintet E flat major K. 407 (386c)

We not only owe three of Mozart’s horn concertos to his friendship with Ignaz Leutgeb; the solo part of this unusual chamber music work was also written especially for him. Instead of having two violins, the accompanying string quartet has two violas, which complement the dark and warm timbre of the horn and lend the work a unique tonal effect. Echoes of motives from the “Abduction from the Seraglio” allow us to suppose that it was composed around the same time as the Singspiel. As the autograph is missing, this edition is based on the first edition. In addition, the critical apparatus provides a careful evaluation of the secondary sources, affording important insights into Mozart’s intentions.

  • Mozart – String Quintets Vol.1

“Because I only need four parts to express everything” – Haydn is said to have replied thus when asked why he had not composed a string quintet. Mozart saw things differently. He applied himself to this genre six times, even giving important parts to the two violas.
Following Volume II, which contains the three most often played quintets, we now warmly recommend Mozart’s first Quintet K. 174 to ensembles, before in 2008 the 3rd and final volume will be published. The editors were able to refer to the autograph, which is once again accessible. It shows Mozart’s intensive compositional work, resulting in the fact that he composed the minuet and finale of the work a second time. The first version of both movements is included in the appendix of our edition, enabling insightful comparisons.

  • Bruch – Streichquintett Es-Dur

On May 18, 2006, a manuscript was auctioned at Sotheby’s that made the world of chamber music sit up and take notice: Shortly before his death, Max Bruch composed three string works that he was no longer able to publish himself. After his death, the two quintets and the octet were considered lost. While the other two works are now accessible again, the E-flat major quintet has not yet been found.
Only now did the well-preserved copy appear in the Sotheby’s catalogue. Evaluated according to all the rules of source criticism, this first edition makes this attractive late-Romantic work available.

  • Schubert – Quintet in A major op. post. 114 D 667

In the summer months of 1819, 1823 and 1825, Schubert traveled with Johann Michael Vogl, his great singer and friend, to Upper Austria and his homeland of Steyr for several weeks. Vogl introduced him to the city’s musical circles, especially to the house and circle of Sylvester Paumgartner, who was Steyr’s music patron in those years and regularly held house concerts in the “music salon” of his house on the town square, roughly comparable to the Sonnleithner evenings in Vienna. Albert Stadler, Schubert’s friend, who himself came from Steyr, reports impressively on Schubert’s relationship to Steyr and especially to Paumgartner in his communications to Ferdinand Luib from 1858. Stadler’s report is the only source on the composition of the quintet:”You are probably familiar with Schubert’s quintuor for pianoforte, violin, viola, cello and double bass with the variations on his ‘Forelle’. He wrote it at the special request of my friend Sylvester Paumgartner, who was delighted with the delightful little song. According to his wish, the quintuor had to retain the structure and instrumentation of Hummel’s quintet, recte septuors, which was still new at the time. Schubert was soon done with it, he kept the section himself. . .”This report shows that the work was written at Paumgartner’s suggestion, but neither where nor when it was composed. However, one can assume that Schubert composed it for Steyr in 1819.

  • Beethoven – Cadenzas For The Violin Concerto In D Major Op.61

Encouraged by Muzio Clementi, the head of a distinguished publishing house in London, Beethoven transformed his Violin Concerto into a Piano Concerto, but retained the cadenzas to the first and third movements for this version. As to the original Violin Concerto, there are no extant cadenzas in Beethoven’s hand. This is why the great violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan transcribed the cadenzas of the piano version for his own instrument, the violin, thus leaving us, in a way, with an original cadenza for the original version.

  • Beethoven – Cadenzas To The Violin Concerto Op.61

Beethoven, Ludwig van – Cadenzas to Beethoven’s Violin Concerto Οp.61
    for Violin and Orchestra

    – Indispensible for all violinists studying this masterpiece
    – First publication of a cadenza by Wieniawski
    – With notes on performance practice
    – With an informative, detailed preface
Beethoven himself left no cadenzas for his Violin Concerto. This edition is unique in drawing together for the first time a selection of cadenzas to one of the most famous works in the history of music, written by composers and violinists over 150 years.
This publication contains not only the well-known cadenzas by Leopold Auer and Joseph Joachim, but also several which are seldom performed, such as those by Ferdinand David (the first surviving cadenza to op. 61), Louis Spohr, Eugène Ysaÿe, Camille Saint-Saëns, Henri Vieuxtemps, Jakob Dont and, for the first time, one by Henryk Wieniawski.
Commentaries (German/English) on the composers and on performance practice are included. The edition complements the piano reduction BA09019 90 and will be invaluable for all violinists studying Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

  • Bloch – Nigun (Improvisation) No. 2 from ‘Baal Shem’

What interests me, wrote Bloch, is the Jewish soul, the enigmatic, ardent, turbulent soul that I feel vibrating throughout the Bible…it is all this that I endeavor to hear in myself and to transcribe into my music; the venerable emotion of the race that slumbers way down in our souls. Bloch’s Baal Shem is made up of I. Vidui (Contrition) — Un poco lento; II. Nigun (Improvisation) — Adagio non troppo; III. Simchas Torah (Rejoicing) — Allegro giocoso. Nigun is the most extrovert composition. Bloch attempts to recreate the feeling of ecstatic religious chanting through a highly charged and ornate melodic line that rises to a fever pitch of spiritual intensity before dying away to a gentle close.
