Rondo for Violin and Strings in A major D 438
 
Complementing Bärenreiter’s editions of the works for violin and piano based on the Urtext of the “New Schubert Edition”, comes Schubert’s utterly charming Rondo in A major for Solo Violin and Strings. The Rondo, dated 1816 is a one movement work containing lyrical as well as virtuoso solo passages and can equally be performed with single strings or with a larger string ensemble.
Our new edition contains an informative introduction (Ger/Eng) by Schubert scholar Michael Kube who is also the arranger of the piano reduction.

As a musician, Franz Ries (1846-1932) is almost forgotten today: the composer, violinist and ‘Königl. Sächs. Hofmusikalienhändler’ studied at the famous Paris Conservatoire to be a violinist. Then, the nephew of Beethoven’s pupil and friend Ferdinand Ries started a glittering solo career which he had to end soon after for health reasons. From then on, he turned his whole attention to the music publishing business and occasionally even contributed little compositions, such as ‘La Capricciosa’ or the newly published ‘Perpetuum mobile’ Op. 34, to the programme of his publishing house. This is the fifth movement from his Suite No. 3 for violin and orchestra (or piano), created around 1870. The little virtuoso piece sweeps by like a whirlwind, hopefully taking only the listeners’, not the violin playing performers’ breath away!

Passacaglia for violin and piano was written in 2003 as a commission by the Hannover International Violin Competition. In honour of Gidon Kremer’s 60th Birthday in 2007, Arvo Pärt arranged the work for 1 or 2 violins, vibraphone (ad lib.) and string orchestra.

“Spiegel im Spiegel” is one of the purest examples of Arvo Pärt’s late compositions in “tintinnabuli style”. It is made up of a melody line together with a tintinnabuli voice that is limited to notes of a tonal triad. This creates a dialogue of voices that mutually pervade each other like one single instrument. Pärt’s music may look simple from the score. In fact it is not that easy to give this piece the right degree of inner sensation.
