Barenreiter Mendelssohn – Sonatas Βιβλίο για Πιάνο και Βιολί
This is the first Urtext edition of Mendelssohn’s Sonatas for Violin and Piano. It contains the early Sonata in F major of 1820 and the Sonata in F minor of 1823, which the 14-year-old composer began with an extended solo recitative for the violin. The edition also includes two versions of the F major sonata of 1838 which Mendelssohn began revising in 1839, though this was restricted to the revision of a major part of the first movement.
These works, similar in difficulty to Franz Schubert’s Sonatinas , are published here in a scholarly-practical edition. The critical edition contains all Mendelssohn’s complete sonatas for these instruments. Hoshino’s Critical Commentary offers valuable information on the history and genesis of the compositions and their sources. Several facsimile pages complete this important new edition.

Unlike other late works by Franck, the Violin Sonata of 1886 found a friendly reception among critics and public from the outset. It is dedicated to Eugène Ysaÿe, who was attracting much attention at the time with his flawless violin technique. Ysaÿe was so inspired by the Sonata that he promised “I will play this masterpiece wherever I can find an artistically-minded pianist”. Nothing has changed to the present day regarding the work’s continuing popularity, but it was time to revise Henle’s previous edition to reflect the latest research. In the intervening period it has been shown that Franck was actively involved in reading the proofs for the printed edition, meaning that the first edition, which contains many differences from the autograph, has become the basis for our new one. The markings of the violin part of our edition are by Yehudi Menuhin; Daniel Hope has undertaken the changes required by the revised musical text.

This is an editorial ‘tour de force’ of this seminal work. The inter-relationships between sources are especially challenging, and the resultant size of the critical commentary in this edition may at first appear daunting. However, the wealth of information it contains repays careful study, in particular, violinists who may have struggled with some of the awkward octave passages in the first movement will be gratified to learn that the source material reveals simpler, and fully authentic, alternatives. Howat also examines in illuminating detail the relationships between bowing and phrasing, the appropriate placing of dynamic markings (sometimes inconsistent across the sources) and of course the ever-present questions of tempo and metronome indications.

Dvorak’s Violin Sonata is regarded as the chamber counterpart to his Violin Concerto in A minor, as its understated, more intimate and private complement. The composer wrote it during a period separating two versions of his concerto, in the spring of 1880, and he first performed the work for a private audience in Berlin with Josef Joachim. It was published by Simrock that same year. This current edition was supervised by Antonin Pokorny and Karel Solc and is issued as part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
