Basics is a collection of practice methods and exercises, and belongs on the music stand, not on the bookshelf. It can be used by players of all standards, from concert violinists to students. Much of the material is also suitable for teaching elementary players.
Each exercise is designed to achieve the maximum possible result in the least possible time. Some are very short and need to be done only once or twice to explore a particular aspect of technique. Others are practice routines or warm-up exercises that can returned to regularly.
Basics is not a book to play through from cover to cover (though, for easy reference, the exercises are numbered sequentially throughout). Everybody’s needs are different, and there is little point in practising anything that does not need to be practised.
The book is invaluable, however, in its presentation of the most effective technical work in a single volume, making it possible to work directly on any aspect of technique that needs attention.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s sonatas and partitas for solo violin belong undoubtedly to those masterworks of the violin literature which every violinist should study thoroughly and come to grips with. It is my concern in this new edition to offer the player encouragement and help in mastering a great variety of problems. The present work is the result of many years’ study of Bach’s music and the intellectual climate of his time. I have tried to give consideration both to requirements of a stylistic nature and to the contemporary technical and tonal possibilities of our instrument. Fingerings, bowings and other annotations stem from my colleagues and, particularly, for young violinists.

SCHOTT Dvorak – Violin Concerto in A Minor, Op.53 Βιβλίο για Πιάνο και Βιολί
As in some previous publications of the editor, this again is an attempt to solve the problem presented on the one hand by an original text which, as it stands, provides only a bare outline of the composer’s ideas of the instrumental execution and on the other by an edition, which fails to indicate where important additions or modifications have been made.
The editor had unfortunately not the original Manuscript this time at his disposal and this edition has therefore been based on the score of the Chech Publishing House “ARTIA”, which is generally most reliable.
Dvorak’s original text (Artia, Prague|), without any editorial modifications (and keeping even all obvious errors of the Mss.), is preserved in the violin part of the present piano score, whereas the separate violin part is an edited version. The differences can easily be seen by comparing the two.
The piano reduction is an entirely new transcription of the orchestral score.
