  • Rossini – Petite Messe Solennelle

The “Petite Messe solennelle” is the finest work of Rossini’s late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with the “Stabat mater”, the mass is one of the composer’s mostimportant sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18 th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini’s day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this, other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements. The piano reduction by Andreas Köhs is extremely idiomatic and largely preserves the charming character of the unusual instrumentation.

  • Jan – The Memetics of Music

Richard Dawkins’s formulation of the meme concept in his 1976 classic The Selfish Gene has inspired three decades of work in what many see as the burgeoning science of memetics. Its underpinning theory proposes that human culture is composed of a multitude of particulate units, memes, which are analogous to the genes of biological transmission. These cultural replicators are transmitted by imitation between members of a community and are subject to mutational-evolutionary pressures over time. Despite Dawkins and several others using music in their exemplifications of what might constitute a meme, these formulations have generally been quite rudimentary, even naive. This study is the first musicologically-orientated attempt systematically to apply the theory of memetics to music. In contrast to the two points of view normally adopted in music theory and analysis – namely those of the listener and the composer – the purpose of this book is to argue for a distinct and illuminating third perspective. This point of view is metaphorical and anthropomorphic, and the metaphor is challenging and controversial, but the way of thinking adopted has its basis in well-founded scientific principles and it is capable of generating insights not available from the first two standpoints. The perspective is that of the (selfish) replicated musical pattern itself, and adopting it is central to memetics.
The approach taken is both theoretical and analytical. Starting with a discussion of evolutionary thinking within musicology, Jan goes on to cover the theoretical aspects of the memetics of music, ranging from quite abstract philosophical speculation to detailed consideration of what actually constitutes a meme in music. In doing so, Jan draws upon several approaches current in music theory, including Schenkerism and Narmour’s implication-realization model. To demonstrate the practical utility of the memetic perspective, Chapter 6 applies it analytically, tracing the transmission of tetrachordal memes in string quartets of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven using computer resources. The book concludes with a consideration of the broader significance of memetics for understanding the interplay between (human) nature and (musical) culture.
In all, the book is a tour de force for the wider implications of memetics for music.

  • Cambridge University Press Walton Benjamin – Rossini in Restoration Paris 1Βιβλίο Μουσικολογίας – Μουσικής θεωρίας

Best remembered for such light-hearted works as Il barbiere di Siviglia, Gioachino Rossini produced a sequence of large-scale serious French operas after his move to Paris in 1824 which overwhelmed audiences with their musical power, and responded to the French Restoration. Rather than presenting a traditional account of Rossini’s life and works, Benjamin Walton traces instead the shifting patterns of Rossinian criticism from before the composer’s arrival in Paris to the end of the 1820s, outlining a type of musical history that uses immersion in a narrow time period as a way to reconceive the relationships between opera and the wider currents of life outside the opera house. In place of the comic Rossini of later memory, this book argues for a composer whose music resonated with the experience of contemporary life, and was integrally bound up in the struggle to define French romanticism at the time.

  • Berlioz – Die Trojaner [Vocal Score]

    Berlioz, Hector – Les Troyens

    Language: German/French/English
    Product format: Opera
    Pages: 580
    Binding: Hardback
    Publisher: Barenreiter
    CONTENTS
The vocal score to “Les Troyens ” presents the text Berlioz conceived as a great five act opera. During the composition of this work between 1856 and 1858 and up until June 1863, Berlioz perceived “Les Troyens ” as one opera. Because of performance difficulties, the composition had to be divided into two operas, “La Prise de Troie ” and “Les Toyens à Carthage ”.
Berlioz began to write the libretto in Paris in April 1856 and completed it on June 26th of that same year. The dramatic material of acts III-V is taken from books 1 and 4 of Virgil’s “ Aeneid ”.
The two trojan acts are loosely based on books 1 and 2 by Virgil.
Berlioz wrote in May 1861: “I am sure that I have created a great work, greater and superior to anything I have ever written before”.
The vocal score is based on the three-volume New Berlioz Edition and also on the one-volume vocal score edition that under Berlioz’s supervision, was privately printed in 1861-62 and then distributed. The appendix contains two complete scenes: The Sinon scene from the first act and the original finale from the fifth act.
