Ως ένθερμος λάτρης της μουσικής του Γιόχαν Σεμπάστιαν Μπαχ, ο Ντμίτρι Σοστακόβιτς διέθετε βαθιά κατανόηση της αντίστιξης και εξαιρετική δεξιοτεχνία στον συγκεκριμένο τομέα. Marche Slave, Op. 31, («Σλαβική Πορεία») παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στη Μόσχα τον Νοέμβριο του 1876. Είναι ένα ξεσηκωτικό πατριωτικό έργο βασισμένο σε σερβικά και ρωσικά λαϊκά θέματα. Ο Τσαϊκόφσκι ανατέθηκε να γράψει το κομμάτι ειδικά για μια συναυλία προς όφελος των Σέρβων στρατιωτών που τραυματίστηκαν ενώ πολεμούσαν (με τη βοήθεια Ρώσων εθελοντών) ενάντια στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία.
