  • Barenreiter Skrjabin – Complete Piano Sonatas II

Piano works were at the centre of Alexander Skrjabin’s compositional output. As an outstanding pianist, he began writing mainly miniatures for his instrument in the style of Romantic piano pieces. But it was also Skrjabin who, unlike any other composer of his generation, contributed to the continuation of the sonata tradition. Particular milestones in his output were Sonatas nos. 4 and 5 of 1903 and 1907, in which we hear forms and harmonies not heard previously. When these works are occasionally given the name “Poème” Sonatas, this indicates that they stem from the time and allude to the compositional context of Skrjabin’s daring orchestral works ‘ Le Divin Poème ‘ and ‘ Le Poème de l´exstase ‘.The editor Christoph Flamm is an expert in Russian music, particularly piano music. His research, for example, into Nikolai Medtner and the editions based on these findings, are regarded as standard works. For his Bärenreiter edition of Skrjabin’s Sonata no. 5, Christoph Flamm has drawn on sources which were until recently regarded as lost or could only be consulted with great difficulty.

  • Barenreiter Skrjabin – Complete Piano Sonatas I

The piano sonatas are regarded as the central works of Alexander Skrjabin’s compositional output. No other composer after Beethoven reshaped this genre so radically, thereby reinvigorating the tradition of the sonata. Skrjabin’s desire not simply to continue the existing tradition, but to surpass it, is evident as early as his first sonatas. These are exciting works from the pianist’s perspective and in their abundance of expression and wealth of imagination. Up to the third sonata Skrjabin developed a distinctive feeling for structural coherence and cyclical unity which at the same time revealed poetic qualities. This volume contains the earlier works; sonatas officially published during the composer’s lifetime as No. 1 op. 6, No. 2 (Sonate-Fantaisie) op. 19 and No. 3 op. 23 as well as the sonatas written during his youth, in G-sharp minor (1886) and E-flat minor (1887-89). The edition also includes the virtually unknown fragment of a sonata in C-sharp minor (1887) and the reconstructed parts of a sonata in G-sharp minor (1892) never previously published. The editor Christoph Flamm draws on autograph manuscripts, first printed editions and on Russian editions of the 1920s. For the first time the recordings of Sonatas nos. 2 and 3 which Skrjabin made in 1908 on paper rolls for the Hupfeld company, Leipzig are also taken into account.

  • Smetana – Polkas

The polka is to Bedrich Smetana (1824–1884) a compositional form similar to the polonaise and mazurka to Chopin, or the waltz to the Strauss family. The artistic stylisation of the polka engaged the composer from his earliest attempts at composition, and he returned to it in his mature works. The works in this new Urtext edition – Three Salon Polkas op. 7, Three Poetic Polkas op. 8, Reminiscences of Bohemia in the Form of Polkas op. 12 and 13 and polkas from the 1850s – together with the series of Czech dances, form a high point of Smetana’s compositions in this genre. The edition is based on a Critical Edition of the piano works of Bedrich Smetana which has been revised by the pianist and Smetana interpreter Jan Novotny. Novotny’s editorial commentary forms part of the edition.

  • Barenreiter Bach – Keyboard Works Of Doubtful Authenticity

A large number of works have survived bearing the name of Johann Sebastian Bach, the authenticity of which has been called into question on various occasions. This edition now combines all those pieces where Bach’s authorship has been either verified by the musicologists at the “ New Bach Edition” or where there is a degree of certainty about this. The edition gathers together a range of different types of composition: as well as numerous preludes and fugues, there are toccatas, dance and concert works. Two adaptations after the violin solo sonatas BWV 1003 and 1005 are worth special mention. These two works demonstrate particularly clearly what applies to all the other works in this volume: whether Bach’s authorship is doubtful or not, there is no question that this is a collection of fascinating music. This performing edition corresponds to the complete edition volume of the “ New Bach Edition” BA 5296 (Series V, Vol. 12), published in 2006.

  • Bach – Keyboard Works Attributed to J.S. Bach

This edition complements the volume of Keyboard Works of Doubtful Authenticity (BA 5250).It contains works which have survived bearing Johann Sebastian Bach’s name or were later attributed to Bach, but where Bach has been ruled out as a composer in the opinion of the editors on stylistic grounds or following a critical examination of the sources. But having said that, it is hard to be negative about these compositions of consistently high quality. Furthermore, this is a largely unknown repertoire; almost half of the pieces in the volume are previously unpublished. As a result, this edition invites curious and open-minded musicians on a voyage of discovery.“In fact this is the perfect source material for student editions and Interpreters, training them to think and ‘play Baroque’ without the usually printed help, and in guaranteed-unfamiliar music. Rewarding albums.”(Music Teachers, Sept. 09)

Bärenreiter’s publication of a new volume of the “Works of Gioachino Rossini”, in collaboration with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at the University of Chicago, makes available an edition of the opera “Il barbiere di Siviglia” which meets modern demands. The editors have recently identified numerous carelessly edited places in the last critical edition by referring to additional sources. The greatest changes relate to the overture; for the new edition, no fewer than twenty different autograph manuscripts have been consulted.A detailed appendix containing alternative vocal parts, advice on ornamentation and compositions by Rossini significant in the performance history of the opera complete the volume.A 420-page Critical Commentary is published separately. With this, a critical edition is now available to interpreters, enabling them to perform Rossini‘s „Barber of Seville” with the greatest possible confidence in the accuracy of the musical material. The performance material is available on hire, and a vocal score will be published at the end of 2009.Through 1829 Rossini was an extraordinarily prolific composer of operas, comic, serious, and semiserious, in Italian and French, as well as of a great deal of vocal and instrumental music. He composed sacred music, vocal treatises, cantatas. Then, for many different reasons, he wrote very little music for more than twentyfive years, if we except some songs and the ‘ Stabat Mater’ . Only after he left Italy definitively for Paris in 1855 did he find his voice again.Between 1857 and 1868 a fresh group of masterpieces issued from his pen, the so-called ‘ Péchés de vieillesse’ (Sins of Old Age), including chamber music, songs, and the ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’.Bärenreiter in cooperation with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at The University of Chicago will publish ten volumes in the series Works of Gioachino Rossini, in critical editions, during the period 2007–2011. These are all volumes that were not issued in the “Edizione critica delle opere di Gioachino Rossini”.

  • Janacek – String Quartet N.1 (Parts)

    – Urtext from the “Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leos Janacek”
    – All available sources have been taken into consideration
    – Detailed foreword (Cz/Eng/Ger) by Milos Stedron
In October 1923 the Czech Quartet invited Leos Janacek to “compose something for them”.
This provided the stimulus for his first string quartet. The work was inspired by Tolstoy’s             “Kreutzer Sonata” (which he had written influenced by Beethoven’s famous violin sonata).
Janacek had also read Tolstoy’s story earlier in the original Russian and already at that time it had inspired him to compose a piano trio in 1907 which was later lost.
Janacek’s string quartet is a masterwork by the almost 70-year-old composer. The work sparked a creative impulse which continued with the composition of the second string quartet “Intimate Letters” in the last years of the composer’s life.
