  • Barenreiter Carl P. E. Bach – Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen Βιβλίο

“Essay on the real Art of Piano Playing” (Text in German)  Reprint of the first edition Berlin 1753 and 1762, with extensive biographical and subject index – music examples in modern clefs.  On the one hand this is a practical teaching book which brought about many innovations in the areas of technique, ornaments and refined playing of a figured bass; on the other hand is is a significant document of the “new music” aesthetics favoured by the generation between J.S.Bach and the Vienna Classic.

Debussy’s only string quartet composed in 1893 was his first masterwork. Together with two further works from this creative period, “ Prélude à l’après -midi d’un faune ” and “ Pelléas et Mélisande ”, the quartet established the composer’s position as the rising star of the French music scene.
Discrepancies existed from the initial publication in 1894 between the score, corrected and seen into print by the composer and the parts, not corrected by him. At a later point, Debussy made a large number of corrections and alterations in a copy of the first edition; these alterations have been incorporated in this Bärenreiter Urtext edition.
This scholarly-critical edition utilises all sources including the composer’s letters, which offer a valuable insight into the genesis of the composition.

Gabriel Fauré’s only string quartet which was composed in 1923-24 is the composer’s final work and was written at the suggestion of his publisher Jacques Durand. Until then, Fauré had always put off writing a string quartet, evidently because of Beethoven’s imposing shadow.
When Fauré composed the quartet he was already extremely ill. He added dynamics   and slurs only in some parts of the exposition of the first movement and then asked his former pupil Jean Roger-Ducasse to complete the work. Roger-Ducasse’s additions were however very extensive; he even altered and supplemented some of Fauré’s own markings in the exposition. Bärenreiter’s first ever scholarly critical edition of the quartet utilises all sources including the composer’s letters which provide valuable insights into the origins of the composition.
In particular, Fauré’s penultimate work, the Piano Trio op. 120, was used to guide the editor with his emendations.

  • Barenreiter Edward Elgar – Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra E minor op. 85 Βιβλίο

  • Barenreiter Bach – Six Suites For Cello Solo BWV 1007-1012 Βιβλίο για τσέλο

This edition, in contrast to the array of Bach Cello Suite publications available today, has made use of all the five sources which have come down to us. The basis for this edition is the most reliable of the sources, the manuscript copy in the hand of A. M. Bach. All variant readings from the four other sources are clearly laid out for performance. Cellists now have the possibility of rendering performances based on just one of the five sources as well as the option of combining the sources in a mixed version.

    Berlioz, Hector – Les Troyens

    Language: German/French/English
    Product format: Opera
    Pages: 580
    Binding: Hardback
    Publisher: Barenreiter
    CONTENTS
The vocal score to “Les Troyens ” presents the text Berlioz conceived as a great five act opera. During the composition of this work between 1856 and 1858 and up until June 1863, Berlioz perceived “Les Troyens ” as one opera. Because of performance difficulties, the composition had to be divided into two operas, “La Prise de Troie ” and “Les Toyens à Carthage ”.
Berlioz began to write the libretto in Paris in April 1856 and completed it on June 26th of that same year. The dramatic material of acts III-V is taken from books 1 and 4 of Virgil’s “ Aeneid ”.
The two trojan acts are loosely based on books 1 and 2 by Virgil.
Berlioz wrote in May 1861: “I am sure that I have created a great work, greater and superior to anything I have ever written before”.
The vocal score is based on the three-volume New Berlioz Edition and also on the one-volume vocal score edition that under Berlioz’s supervision, was privately printed in 1861-62 and then distributed. The appendix contains two complete scenes: The Sinon scene from the first act and the original finale from the fifth act.

Young cellists (and their teachers and parents) will have fun taking this musical promenade through the zoo. Animals from A to Z help young learners to master cello techniques and skills in a spirit of fun. Tiny ants form caravans with minuscule footsteps, a lion roars in two-part counterpoint, a seal frolics in a liquid 6/8, and two little donkeys draw attention with daring glissandos.

  • Barenreiter Grutzmacher – Technology Of Cello Playing Op.38 Βιβλίο για τσέλο

The German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher (1832-1903), an influential teacher and composer, wrote two important works containing studies: “ Tägliche Übungen ” (Daily Exercises) op. 67 and “Twenty-four Etudes” op. 38.
Grützmacher was greatly admired during the 19th century for his brilliant playing technique and this forms the central part of his studies op. 38. To this day the twenty-four studies form an integral part of cellist’s study repertoire and the development of a well-grounded cello technique.
As with Martin Rummel’s editions of Popper’s studies and the Duport Etudes, the new Grützmacher publication contains a booklet with valuable tips and references to other works in the cello repertoire requiring similiar solutions to technical problems.

    – Fold-out pages for ease of playing
    – Large format

  • Barenreiter Merk – 20 Etudes for Violoncello Op.11 Βιβλίο για τσέλο

On the heels of his successful cello etude publications of Popper, Duport , Grützmacher and Lee, Martin Rummel has focused his pedagogical skills on the important op. 11 etudes by Josef Merk (1795–1852). Merk was one of the most influential cellists of the first half of the 19th century enjoying the admiration of Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin. The op. 11 etudes dedicated to Schubert have remained a classic of violoncello instruction through to today.
The editor Martin Rummel has based his new edition of the op. 11 etudes on the first edition published by the Viennese company Haslinger .
The editor has sparingly added fingerings, bow strokes and slurs indicating them editorially so players can immediately see the textural alterations.

  • Barenreiter Seitz – Concerto Nr.2 in G Major Op.13 for Violin & Piano Βιβλίο για σύνολα

    Language: German/English
    Product format: Piano reduction, Part
    Instrumentation: Violin Solo, Piano
    Solo Pages: 9
    Piano Pages: 11
    Publisher: Barenreiter
    CONTENTS
When the young Marlene Dietrich took violin lessons in Dessau from Friedrich Seitz (1848-1918), did she have this concerto in her repertoire? Whatever the case, her career, as we all know, took off on a different slant. But the Student Concerto in G major, op. 13, advanced to become one of the most popular and effective recital pieces for young violinists en route to the great concert stage.
Friedrich Seitz was a concertmaster and violin teacher, first in Magdeburg and later, from 1884, in Dessau. He published his op. 13 concerto in 1893. It is laid out in the conventional three movements: a charming Allegro non troppo poised between concert and salon music, a sentimental Adagio in a minor key, and a merry Rondo in 6/8 metre as a finale. Like almost every work by this passionate music educator, it stands in the facile e brillant tradition, achieving maximum impact with minimum technical demands while adopting the posture of a virtuoso concerto. A solid command of the first position is sufficient for its performance, with good left- and right-hand coordination required in the fast passages. The learner’s technical skills are honed on simple double stops and détaché, legato and elementary spiccato bowing. Typical formal sections, such as a cadenza in the opening movement, and lovely, memorable melodies, call for an imaginative delivery: students learn how much fun it can be to play ‘virtuoso’ music!
This edition appears in the Bärenreiter’s Concert Pieces series, which includes popular concertos and concert pieces for young violinists. The editor is the internationally acclaimed violin teacher Kurt Sassmannshaus, who has added fingering and bowing to the solo part and explains the technical requirements in a short preface.
    – One of the most popular and effective student concertos of the 19th century
    – Written entirely in first position
    – Includes a solo part and a score with the piano accompaniment
    – Short preface in German and English with information on technical requirements

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) wrote the Polonaise in A major for the cellist Alois Neruda , with whom he premiered many of his chamber-music works. The sparkling composition shows that Dvorak, who had been violist in the Prague Provisional Theater , was intimately acquainted with the virtuoso possibilities of the string instruments.
This is a brilliant piece which absolutely should not be missing from the repertoire of proficient cellists.

    Composer / Author: Smetana, Bedrich
The composition of the first string quartet “From My Life” was preceded by a period of fateful changes in Smetana’s life. In 1874 he lost his hearing. Two years later he moved with his family to Jabkenice in the countryside, which seemed to him like an expulsion; he suffered from his deafness and missed contact with like-minded company. He presented the string quartet as a conversation within a close circle of four friends who discuss what is tormenting them. It is a kind of passionate and resigned dialogue between a spirited person and his destiny. Smetana’s first string quartet soon became one of the most frequently performed works in the quartet repertoire.
The musical text of the new edition is based on the “Study Edition of the Works of Bedrich Smetana”, Volume XV – Chamber Music Works.

Janácek’s 2nd String Quartet, “Intimate Letters”, is regarded as a highlight of the modern string quartet literature. It was written during the composer’s last year of life, between 29 January and 19 February 1928, inspired by the ageing Janácek’s exceptional love for Kamila Stösslová. The Moravian Quartet devoted themselves to this impressive work; Janácek attended a total of three of their rehearsals in May and June 1928. This had several consequences, including his abandoning his original idea of using a viola d’amore. After Janácek’s unexpected death (12 August 1928) the uncertain genesis of the work became the greatest problem of the “Intimate Letters”: the surviving copies were not definitively authorised.
The editors of this new edition have reverted to Janácek’s autograph sketches as the main, most reliable source and using these as a basis, have reconstructed the work as it stood at the point of Janácek’s death. The musical text, taken from the “Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leos Janácek” (Vol. E/4), therefore contains clear differences in comparison with older editions.

Leos Janácek, almost seventy years old, characterised the wind sextet he had just finished as “a kind of memory of youth” in a letter to Kamila Stösslová. The suite “Youth” was written in the summer of 1924, prompted by the composer’s need to take stock on the occasion of his 70 th birthday. Janácek also heard the Parisian ensemble “Société moderne des instruments à vent” several times in Salzburg and Brno. He expanded the classic quintet scoring by the addition of a bass clarinet.
Janácek referred to an earlier part of his life in this work not only by quoting a theme from “March of the Blue Boys”, but particularly through his general freshness of expression, astute humour and use of form which adhered to the classical style.
The piece was enthusiastically received by both critics and the public and appeared in print as early as 1925 issued by the Prague publisher Hudební matice.
