Volume / Series : Full Score
    Language: English

    Publisher: Dover Publications
    Composer / Author: Joseph Haydn
    CONTENTS
“It was from Haydn that I first learned the true way to compose quartets.” — Mozart.
Twelve String Quartets marks the second volume in a projected monumental undertaking — the complete Haydn string quartets. Players and students, music historians, and Haydn lovers will have inexpensive access to a uniform, strongly bound, and clearly printed modern edition of Haydn’s finest pieces in complete score.
Musicians, music students, and music publishers have a difficult time keeping up with Haydn, whose ceaseless production of original, first-rate work was legendary. He essayed most of the recognized genres, conferring upon several a legacy of expanded possibilities and clearly defined, characteristic form. Among these may be mentioned the symphony, the sonata, and perhaps most notably, the quartet.
In a period of 50 years, Haydn (1732–1809) composed over 80 string quartets. Scholars are still debating questions of attribution and even completeness (unknown works by Haydn still turn up), and music lovers have had to make do with scattered, out-of-date, out-of- print editions of a few of the more familiar quartets.
Otto Jahn wrote: “It is not often that a composer hits so exactly upon the form suited to his compositions; the quartet was Haydn’s natural mode of expressing his feelings.” Haydn’s affinity to the quartet began with his earliest works, when he perhaps more than anyone established the four-movement structure of chamber music. In common with truly great and complete artists, who surpass early innovation to achieve their greatest work at the end, Haydn’s later quartets are his best.
This volume contains the full scores of:
Op. 55, Nos. 1–3 (including “Razor”) — dedicated to Joh. Tost, ca. 1788
Op. 65, Nos. 1–6 (including “The Lark” or “Hornpipe”) — dedicated to Joh. Tost, 1790 or 1792
Op. 71, Nos. 1–3 — dedicated to Count Appony, 1793
Large readable noteheads, ample margins for fingerings, etc., opaque paper, and permanent binding make this a fundamental addition to music libraries and musicians’ repertories: a book for all who pay tribute to Haydn and who agree with Grove’s Dictionary: “The quartet he … brought to perfection.”

    Composer / Author: Jean Sibelius
    CONTENTS
Finland’s greatest composer and a major figure in the development of Scandinavian music, Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) is admired for his complete mastery of symphonic form. Of the seven symphonies he composed, each differs greatly from the others, for Sibelius rarely approached the symphonic “problem” the same way. Each work seems committed to the thoughts, feelings, and logic of the movement.
Sibelius’s first two symphonies remain among his most accessible and popular. Of all his symphonic works, perhaps the First Symphony, composed in 1898–99, adheres most to classical form yet reflects the spirit of Nordic nationalism that came to be associated with the composer’s music.
The Second Symphony, perhaps his most expansive and melodious work in symphonic form, demonstrates Sibelius’s increasing command of orchestral form and scoring. These two major works are reprinted here from the definitive full-score editions published by Breitkopf & Härtel, Leipzig.

Liszt’s reputation as perhaps the greatest pianist of all time is powerfully supported by his dazzling body of work for solo piano. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the romantic repertoire. This superbly produced yet inexpensive two-volume edition presents all of Liszt’s etudes as edited by the great pianist, composer, and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Härtel in Leipzig in 1910–11.This second volume, Series II, includes many of Liszt’s most important piano works. Liszt’s creative method can be observed in his reworking of the Etudes d’ Exécution Transcendante d’après Paganini into the Grande Etudes de Paganini (better known as simply the Paganini Etudes), and the similar revision of the “Morceau de Salon” into “Ab Irato.” The separate etudes cover a wide stylistic range, from the dazzling technical display of the most popular of the Paganini Etudes, “La Campanella,” to the graceful, restrained lyricism of “Waldesrauschen.” Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality.

    Composer / Author: Alexander Borodin
    CONTENTS
It was said of Russian composer Alexander Borodin (1833–87) that “no musician has ever claimed immortality with so slender an offering.” His lifelong work as a graduate research chemist and teacher preoccupied him, leaving little time for the music composing that he loved. But while the quantity of Borodin’s compositions was small, the quality of his music was extraordinarily high. Such works as his opera Prince Igor, his first two symphonies, two string quartets, and songs place him firmly in the front rank of nineteenth-century Russian composers. This volume brings together Borodin’s two most popular works: the melodious, vivacious “Polovtsian Dances” from Prince Igor and the richly evocative tone poem “In the Steppes of Central Asia.”
The enormous success of these works is evidenced by their frequent performance in concerts worldwide and their many recordings. This attractive, durable, authoritative edition brings the full score of each composition to students, musicians, conductors, and music lovers everywhere.

  • DOVER Publications Handel – Great Concerti Op.4 & 7 [Full Score] Βιβλίο για σύνολα

Volume / Series : Full Score
    Language: English
    Pages: 144
    Publisher: Dover Publications
Composer / Author: George Frideric Handel
    CONTENTS
Handel was renowned throughout Europe as one of the most accomplished organists of the Baroque age. His keyboard contest with Domenico Scarlatti is famous; both were superb harpsichordists but everyone — including the proud Scarlatti — acknowledged Handel’s superiority on the organ.
Handel’s talent manifested itself early in his life. During a visit to the court of Saxe-Weissenfels, the eight-year-old Handel’s mastery of the organ was so arresting that it captured the attention and admiration of the duke, who insisted the boy be given every opportunity to develop his extraordinary gift. Handel then studied under F. W. Zachow, organist of the Liebfrauenkirche at Halle. When he was 17 and a newly enrolled law student at the University of Halle, he was appointed to the position of organist at the Calvinist Cathedral. So ended Handel’s law studies, and so began the career of one of the most celebrated musician-composers of all time.
The organ concerto is for all intents and purposes Handel’s own invention. Originally intended as supplements to his famous English oratorios and often performed by Handel himself, these pieces, in addition to displaying Handel’s characteristic creativity and freedom of invention, give testimony to his virtuosity on the organ and reveal his profound love of the instrument.
This volume reproduces 12 organ concerti, Opp. 4 and 7, in full score as they appeared in the authoritative Deutsche Händelgesellschaft edition. Organists, Handel enthusiasts, and lovers of fine music will delight in this remarkably affordable volume of pieces for the organ by the master organist of the Baroque age.

  • DOVER Publications Brahms – Complete Concerti [Full Score] Βιβλίο για σύνολα

Volume / Series : Full Score
    Language: English
    Pages: 352
    Publisher: Dover Publications
    Composer / Author: Johannes Brahms
    CONTENTS
Often called the last of the great classical composers, Brahms accommodated powerful romantic inclination to the demands of traditional musical form. The result is “a delightful mixture of classical form clothed in the multicolored hues of German romanticism.” (John Gillespie, Five Centuries of Keyboard Music).
Brahms’s masterful synthesis of these disparate elements: his inventive rhythmic drive and happy fusion of poetry and sound workmanship are strikingly evidenced in the concerti. Although he wrote only four — two for piano, one for violin, and one double concerto for violin and cello — they have all become absolute staples of the concert repertoire. Because they are for different instruments, however, they have rarely been available together in one convenient volume — until now. This Dover edition reproduces all four concerti directly from Breitkopf and Härtel’s definitive Sämtliche Werke, Volumes 5 and 5, c. 1920–27. The original editor’s commentary by Hans Gal is included both in German and in English.
The four concerti are Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15; Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 83; Violin Concerto, Op. 77; and Concerto for Violin and Cello, Op. 102.
With this single low-priced volume, students, composers, and musicologists may savor Brahms’s development in the form (extending over three decades, 1845–87). Conductors and librarians will have a handy, inexpensive, complete collection, and musicians and music lovers will find a way to experience the inexhaustible variety of one of music’s great masters.

Volume / Series : Full Score
    Language: English
    Pages: 208
    Publisher: Dover Publications
Composer / Author: Johann Sebastian Bach
    CONTENTS
Among the many great works created for the church liturgy by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Magnificat in D is one of the most universally loved and studied. It is thought that Bach originally composed it for Christmas 1723, soon after arriving in Leipzig to take up his musical duties at the Thomasschule, then later revised it.
Bach scored the Latin text of the Magnificat for the soloists, five-part chorus, and an orchestra of two flutes, two oboes, three trumpets, timpani, strings, and basso continuo. Powerful, compact, and deeply moving, this ardent hymn of praise is today one of the most frequently performed of all masterworks of devotional music.
In addition to the Magnificat, this volume contains all six Bach motets. Most of these stirring contrapuntal works, generally sung a cappella, were created, like the Magnificat, during the composer’s earliest years in Leipzig. The motets were composed for special occasions, probably for memorial services of prominent Leipzig citizens.
The motets are “Singet dem Herr nein neues Lied,” “Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf,” “Jesu, meine Freude,” “Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin bei dir,” Komm, Jesu, komm!” and “Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden.” Along with the Magnificat in D, they have been reprinted here from the authoritative Bach-Gesellschaft edition published by Breitkopt & Härtel of Leipzig.

    Composer / Author: Joseph Haydn
    CONTENTS
“It was from Haydn that I first learned the true way to compose quartets.” — Mozart Eleven Late String Quartets marks the first volume in a projected monumental undertaking — the complete Haydn string quartets. He essayed most of the recognized genres, confessing upon several a legacy of expanded possibilities and clearly defined, characteristic form. Among these may be mentioned the symphony, the sonata, and perhaps most notably, the quartet. In a period of 50 years, Haydn (1732–1809) composed over 80 string quartets. Scholars are still debating questions of attribution and even completeness (unknown works by Haydn still turn up) and music lovers have had to make do with scattered, out-of-date, out-of-print editions of a few of the more familiar quartets. Haydn’s affinity to the quartet began with his earliest works, when he perhaps more than anyone established the 4-movement structure of chamber music. In common with truly great and complete artists, who surpass early innovation to achieve their greatest work at the end, Haydn’s last quarters are his best. This work contains the full scores of Op. 74, Nos. 1–3 (including The Horseman); Op. 76, Nos. 1–6 (including The Bell, The Donkey, Emperor, and Sunrise); and Op. 77, Nos. 1, 2 (including Wait till the clouds roll by). Large, readable noteheads, ample margins for fingerings, etc., opaque paper and permanent binding make this a fundamental addition to music libraries and musicians’ repertories.

  • DOVER Publications Handel – Judas Maccabaeus [Full Score] Βιβλίο για σύνολα

Volume / Series : Full Score
    Language: English
    Pages: 256
    Publisher: Dover Publications
Composer / Author: George Frideric Handel
    CONTENTS
Beethoven said of Handel that he of all composers knew best how to achieve grand effects with simple means. Those magnificent moments are nowhere more evident than in Handel’s great oratorios, perennial favorites with audiences and musicians alike. Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians says of Handel: “. . . in oratorio he brought the level of artistry to a higher plane than his contemporaries.”
Judas Maccabaeus was first performed in London at Covent Garden in 1747 and was an instant success. The subject of the oratorio ― the triumph of the Jewish warrior-hero Judas Maccabaeus over the invading enemies of the Israelites ― was deliberately chosen to appeal to the patriotic sympathies of eighteenth-century Londoners immediately after the crushing of the Jacobite rebellion in April 1746.
Although political overtones had some role in the oratorio’s initial success, it is the beauty, dramatic power, and brilliant originality of the arias, duets, and choruses that have kept this work constantly in the active repertoire. This is religious music on a grand scale in a work that has greatly influenced major choral music into the twentieth century. Now all music lovers can enjoy the full score of this splendid masterwork, reprinted here in an authoritative, inexpensive edition.
