Among the many great works created for the church liturgy by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Magnificat in D is one of the most universally loved and studied. It is thought that Bach originally composed it for Christmas 1723, soon after arriving in Leipzig to take up his musical duties at the Thomasschule, then later revised it.
Bach scored the Latin text of the Magnificat for the soloists, five-part chorus, and an orchestra of two flutes, two oboes, three trumpets, timpani, strings, and basso continuo. Powerful, compact, and deeply moving, this ardent hymn of praise is today one of the most frequently performed of all masterworks of devotional music.
In addition to the Magnificat, this volume contains all six Bach motets. Most of these stirring contrapuntal works, generally sung a cappella, were created, like the Magnificat, during the composer’s earliest years in Leipzig. The motets were composed for special occasions, probably for memorial services of prominent Leipzig citizens.
The motets are “Singet dem Herr nein neues Lied,” “Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf,” “Jesu, meine Freude,” “Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin bei dir,” Komm, Jesu, komm!” and “Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden.” Along with the Magnificat in D, they have been reprinted here from the authoritative Bach-Gesellschaft edition published by Breitkopt & Härtel of Leipzig.

In 1874 Henrik Ibsen invited Edvard Grieg to compose incidental music for a staged version of his Norwegian verse drama Peer Gynt. The result of this collaboration between Norway’s greatest dramatist and its greatest composer was a set of pieces that have become among the best known and most loved of the late nineteenth century.
Grieg’s complete incidental score to Peer Gynt comprises 22 pieces: it is the two orchestral suites arranged from eight of these pieces that have become staples of the repertoire, with innumerable performances and dozens of recordings. Some of Mozart’s most enduring and popular music was originally composed for relatively minor occasions — garden parties, weddings, birthdays, home concerts for his friends, and the like. This single volume contains all the string quartets of Mozart: the little-known early quartets in an Italianate manner composed between 1770 and 1773: the six quartets dedicated to Franz Josef Haydn (1782–85); the D Major Quartet (K.499) composed in 1786; and the last three quartets (1789-90) written for the King of Prussia. In addition to the 23 string quartets, the volume contains an alternate slow movement to the G Major Quartet, K. 156.
The music is photographically reprinted from the Breitkopf & Härtel printed score, still considered the standard, authoritative edition for the Mozart quartets.
Noteheads in this edition have been reproduced in a size large enough to be read easily from a music stand or the keyboard, and margins and spaces between staves are conveniently wide to permit written notes, harmonic analysis, fingerings, and running measure numbers.
