Barenreiter Smetana – Macbeth for Piano Βιβλίο για πιάνο
Smetana’s piano sketch Macbeth, also known as Macbeth and the Witches, after William Shakespeare’s tragedy, originated in 1859 while the composer was living in Sweden. Some scholars believe that it was meant to be scored for full orchestra. The work’s dark and gloomy mood is connected with the death of Smetana’s wife Katharina on 19 April 1859. Macbeth only appeared in print posthumously in 1912. It soon entered the piano repertoire, and in the course of the 20th century it was scored for orchestra by Otakar Jeremiáš and for piano and orchestra by Jarmil Burghauser. Our Urtext edition proceeds from the only surviving source, Smetana’s pencil sketch. The editor has added as little as possible to the musical text in order to faithfully recreate the challenge of performing a sketch. Missing rests and rhythmic ‘anomalies’ have been left as in the autograph.

Barenreiter Mozart – Two Duos for Violin and Violoncello Βιβλίο για σύνολα
In the 25 years following Mozart’s death an enormous amount of his music was arranged and adapted for the insatiable appetite of the European musical public. Nearly every major work was arranged for piano four hand, even some of the operas were arranged for string quartet or other chamber scoring. Two new Bärenreiter publications turn back the time and offer us an insight into performance practice of the early 19th century; music meant to be played! The arrangements are of highly popular Mozart chamber compositions, the Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet K. 581 in an anonymous arrangement from 1809 for Clarinet (or Violin) and Piano as well as Mozart’s two duos for Violin and Viola K. 423-424 arranged by Johannes Traeg in 1805 for Violin and Violoncello. The “Grande Sonate” for Clarinet (or Violin) and Piano, published by Artaria, is an early arrangement of a Mozart work of which no autograph exists. The editor, Christopher Hogwood, weaves together the patchwork of sources for the quintet , justifying this arrangement for clarinet and piano as a serious source for the work. Johannes Traeg , an acquaintance of Mozart’s and a publisher, quickly responded to the public demand for domestic Mozart arrangements at the start of the 19th century.
His arrangements of the Violin – Viola duos K. 423-424 for Violin and Violoncello, published in 1805, are a response to the need for a more active cello part in chamber music.
Dietrich Berke, editor of the “New Mozart Edition” and editor of the NMA volume containing the duos, clearly shows the path from the Mozart autograph to the arrangement and offers us an informative preface on the duos and their place in domestic music making at the turn of the 19thcentury. Short text: The Grande Sonate for clarinet (or violin) and piano, published by Artaria , is an early arrangement of a Mozart work where no autograph exists. The editor Christopher Hogwood weaves together the patchwork of sources for the quintet, justifying this arrangement for clarinet and piano as a serious source for the work. – Mozart masterpieces in contemporary arrangements – “Grande Sonate ” in versions for clarinet in A and B-flat – First modern editions – Bärenreiter quality with detailed preface and critical report

Following the “Carnival of the Animals” edition, Jennifer Seubel has now set her sights on the “Moldau”. Barenreiter Haydn – The Seasons Hob. XXI:3 [Vocal Score] Βιβλίο για Φωνή και Πιάνο
Joseph Haydn’s oratorio ‘ The Seasons’ was composed directly after the first successful performances of ‘ The Creation’ .‘The Seasons’ has however been greatly overshadowed by ‘ The Creation’ for a long time and yet this work has far greater changes of style between popular Singspiel and great oratorio than ‘ The Creation’ . ‘ The Seasons’ continues to impress and remains part of the core repertoire to the present with its overwhelming richness of musical character and its immense formal variety. Scarcely another oratorio is able to so captivate an audience with such variety.

Barenreiter Haydn – The Creation Hob. XXI:2 [Vocal Score] Βιβλίο για Φωνή και Πιάνο
The oratorio ”The Creation” represents not only a crucial point in Joseph Haydn‘s compositional output, but at the same time, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the oratorio.
The oratorio ”The Creation” represents not only a crucial point in Joseph Haydn‘s compositional output, but at the same time, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the oratorio. At the turn of the 19th century, Haydn broke with the traditional dominance of the arias, giving the chorus a distinctly greater significance. This opened the way for a new kind of choral oratorio which became one of the standard features of developing bourgeois concert life.
The plot is divided into three parts:
Part One portrays the first four days of creation with the genesis of the world, the plants and the firmament, and in Part Two the animals are included. Part Three takes as its theme the life of the first people, Adam and Eve, with the oratorio culminating in two major closing choruses of praise and thanks. The text, translated from the English original by Baron van Swieten, Prefect of the imperial court library in Vienna, combines prose texts of the creation story in Luther’s translation of the bible with complementary excerpts from John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” (duration: approx. 110 mins).New edition based on the Urtext from the Complete Edition of ”Joseph Haydn’s Works”, published by G. Henle Verlag
Vocal score with a contemporary piano reduction by A. E. Müller, revised by A. Köhs

Barenreiter Piano Kaleidoscope Βιβλίο για πιάνο
This album is a special edition not only due to its very affordable price but also because it features a cross section of Bärenreiter’s extensive piano catalogue. The pieces and movements range from the 18th century through to the first decades of the 20th century. During these approximately 200 years keyboard playing developed considerably and together with the unstoppable rise of the pianoforte since the end of the 18th century, it became hugely popular. The fifteen composers who are represented in this edition have each, in their inimitable way, shaped the possibilities of sound and playing techniques of this instrument in their works. In our piano collection you will find compositions from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Early Modern eras. The pieces also vary in national style and range from low through to high technical difficulty. An appetizer for our Urtext editions – give it a try!

Barenreiter Glazunov – Concerto in E-flat major, Op.109 for Alto Sax & String Orchestra Βιβλίο για σύνολα
The Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra is Alexander Glazunov’s last work; since its first performance in 1934 it has become part of the standard saxophone repertoire. The sole surviving autograph manuscript is the hand-written dedication score given by Glazunov to Sigurd Raschèr (Raschèr was the founder and leader of the well-known and innovative Raschèr Saxophone Quartet). This score contains the original version of the work without the alterations which were made in the proofs to the orchestral score as well as the full version of the composer’s cadenza which was later shortened. The autograph manuscript also contains some performance markings by Raschèr.The correspondence between Raschèr and Glazunov documents the composer’s thoughts on the work and his recommendations about the size of the accompanying string orchestra. Evidence from this correspondence has been integrated into this edition. This first scholarly-critical edition of a work by Glazunov contains an informative introduction with commentaries about the history of its composition, facsimiles and a critical commentary. The solo part includes both the complete and the shortened version of the cadenza as well as a cadenza by Raschèr which the composer authorised.- Includes the original and new solo cadenzas- With helpful performance tips by Carina Raschèr, the daughter of Sigurd Raschèr- With an Urtext solo saxophone part and a second part prepared by Carina Raschèr- Informative foreword (Ger/Eng)

Barenreiter Bach – Orchestral Suite in B minor, BWV 1067 [Pocket Score] Βιβλίο για σύνολα
J.S. Bach’s four Orchestral Suites belong to that select group of works one could truly call classical hits! They stem from Bach’s extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in 1721.Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig. These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the “ New Bach Edition”.At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Bärenreiter’s new edition of Bach’s great four suites now presents the Urtext as found in the “ New Bach Edition” i.e. without emendations and performance suggestions. The orchestral parts have been re-engraved and the material includes an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 including a “Violino concertato” part.

Barenreiter Monti – Czardas, Concert Pieces for Violin and Piano Βιβλίο για Πιάνο και Βιολί
Czardas by Vittorio Monti is a popular as well as a fiery concert and encore piece. His forewords introduce these little gems and include tips for successful first concerts. The editions form an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus violin school tradition; they can be used in parallel from the third volume onwards or alongside any violin method. The editions contain a solo violin part and a piano reduction for the accompanist. Barenreiter Dvorak – Polonaise In A Major for Cello & Piano Βιβλίο για τσέλο
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) wrote the Polonaise in A major for the cellist Alois Neruda , with whom he premiered many of his chamber-music works. The sparkling composition shows that Dvorak, who had been violist in the Prague Provisional Theater , was intimately acquainted with the virtuoso possibilities of the string instruments.
This is a brilliant piece which absolutely should not be missing from the repertoire of proficient cellists.

Barenreiter Merk – 20 Etudes for Violoncello Op.11 Βιβλίο για τσέλο
On the heels of his successful cello etude publications of Popper, Duport , Grützmacher and Lee, Martin Rummel has focused his pedagogical skills on the important op. 11 etudes by Josef Merk (1795–1852). Merk was one of the most influential cellists of the first half of the 19th century enjoying the admiration of Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin. The op. 11 etudes dedicated to Schubert have remained a classic of violoncello instruction through to today.
The editor Martin Rummel has based his new edition of the op. 11 etudes on the first edition published by the Viennese company Haslinger .
The editor has sparingly added fingerings, bow strokes and slurs indicating them editorially so players can immediately see the textural alterations.

Barenreiter Grutzmacher – Technology Of Cello Playing Op.38 Βιβλίο για τσέλο
The German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher (1832-1903), an influential teacher and composer, wrote two important works containing studies: “ Tägliche Übungen ” (Daily Exercises) op. 67 and “Twenty-four Etudes” op. 38.
Grützmacher was greatly admired during the 19th century for his brilliant playing technique and this forms the central part of his studies op. 38. To this day the twenty-four studies form an integral part of cellist’s study repertoire and the development of a well-grounded cello technique.
As with Martin Rummel’s editions of Popper’s studies and the Duport Etudes, the new Grützmacher publication contains a booklet with valuable tips and references to other works in the cello repertoire requiring similiar solutions to technical problems.– Fold-out pages for ease of playing

This edition, in contrast to the array of Bach Cello Suite publications available today, has made use of all the five sources which have come down to us. The basis for this edition is the most reliable of the sources, the manuscript copy in the hand of A. M. Bach. All variant readings from the four other sources are clearly laid out for performance. Cellists now have the possibility of rendering performances based on just one of the five sources as well as the option of combining the sources in a mixed version.€51,80€57,50Available in 1-3 days
