Barenreiter Beethoven – String Quartets Op.59 [Pocket Score] Βιβλίο για σύνολα
Volume / Series : BÄRENREITER URTEXT
Editor: Del Mar, Jonathan
Language: English/German
Pages: 134
Publisher: BarenreiterSome of Beethoven’s most enduring and unabashedly successful works stem from his so-called “Middle Period” and in the genre of chamber music the three op. 59 quartets are an excellent example.
Jonathan Del Mar’s scholarly critical edition of these quartets sets the record straight once and for all, restoring Beethoven’s articulation, dynamics and lengths of slurs just as the composer originally intended.
The interdependency of the sources and their readings are clearly laid out by Del Mar in his Critical Commentary, which also contains facsimiles pointing out ambiguities with previous editions.
– Bärenreiter quality Urtext
– Critical Commentary (Eng) with facsimiles
– Meticulously laid out performance parts
– Study score includes historical introduction (Ger/Eng) by Barry Cooper

Some of Beethoven’s most enduring and unabashedly successful works stem from his so-called “Middle Period” and in the genre of chamber music, the quartets op. 74 and 95 together with the recently issued op. 59 quartets complete this period. Jonathan Del Mar’s scholarly critical edition of quartets op. 74 and 95 sets the record straight once and for all, restoring Beethoven’s articulation, dynamics and lengths of slurs as the composer originally intended.

Composer / Author: Ravel, Maurice
Maurice Ravel’s sole composition for string quartet dating from 1903 is considered today to be one of the most important, most performed and recorded works of the chamber music repertoire.
The editor Juliette Appold , traces the work’s inception and documents its first performance and the reactions to it from none other than Fauré and Debussy. Also addressed are later performances of the work under the supervision of Ravel, the early recordings made under Ravel’s auspices and the first publication by Astruc .
This first ever critical edition of Ravel’s quartet relies not only on the Astruc edition and its proofs, corrected and altered by the composer, but also on the revised edition issued by Durand in 1910.
Needless to say all discrepancies between the score and the later publication of the performing parts are addressed in the Critical Commentary.

Barenreiter Janacek – Youth for Wind Sextet [Pocket Score] Βιβλίο για σύνολα
Volume / Series : BÄRENREITER URTEXT
Editor: Faltus, Leos / Doležal, Jan
Language: Czech, English, German
Pages: 40
Publisher: BarenreiterLeos Janácek, almost seventy years old, characterised the wind sextet he had just finished as “a kind of memory of youth” in a letter to Kamila Stösslová. The suite “Youth” was written in the summer of 1924, prompted by the composer’s need to take stock on the occasion of his 70 th birthday. Janácek also heard the Parisian ensemble “Société moderne des instruments à vent” several times in Salzburg and Brno. He expanded the classic quintet scoring by the addition of a bass clarinet.
Janácek referred to an earlier part of his life in this work not only by quoting a theme from “March of the Blue Boys”, but particularly through his general freshness of expression, astute humour and use of form which adhered to the classical style.
The piece was enthusiastically received by both critics and the public and appeared in print as early as 1925 issued by the Prague publisher Hudební matice.

Janácek’s 2nd String Quartet, “Intimate Letters”, is regarded as a highlight of the modern string quartet literature. It was written during the composer’s last year of life, between 29 January and 19 February 1928, inspired by the ageing Janácek’s exceptional love for Kamila Stösslová. The Moravian Quartet devoted themselves to this impressive work; Janácek attended a total of three of their rehearsals in May and June 1928. This had several consequences, including his abandoning his original idea of using a viola d’amore. After Janácek’s unexpected death (12 August 1928) the uncertain genesis of the work became the greatest problem of the “Intimate Letters”: the surviving copies were not definitively authorised.
The editors of this new edition have reverted to Janácek’s autograph sketches as the main, most reliable source and using these as a basis, have reconstructed the work as it stood at the point of Janácek’s death. The musical text, taken from the “Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leos Janácek” (Vol. E/4), therefore contains clear differences in comparison with older editions.

The internationally renowned Beethoven scholar has turned his attention to a set of chamber musical crown jewels; Beethoven’s important opus 18 string quartets. The new Bärenreiter publication is not based on a reprint of the first edition parts, but makes use of a manuscript set of parts with some corrections in Beethoven’s hand which turned up in the 1980s.
The new edition clarifies many ambiguities in slurring and dynamics as well as numerous wrong notes in the inner voices. It offers performers a fully reliable music text impeccably laid out so as to meet the needs of performers.
The result of Del Mar’s work can be summed up with the words; “clarity”, “transparency” , ”excellence”.
– Bärenreiter quality Urtext
– Critical Commentary with facsimiles
– Meticulously laid out performance parts
On a firmer footing: The most reliable editions are mainly found in the Complete Editions. But even volumes of the Complete Editions lose their up-to- dateness as soon as important sources emerge which the editor did not know. So it is with the volume of Beethoven’s six string quartets Op. 18, written between 1798 and 1800, which was published in the Beethoven Complete Edition in 1962. For several decades, this was the standard edition of these quartets. But it is based on an inaccurate source – the original printed edition of 1801 (Beethoven’s autograph has not survived). Only at the end of the 1980s was a copy of the parts, independent of this source, discovered. This permitted the many problems which were raised by the 1801 print to be solved. Jonathan Del Mar has now gone back to these important copies for his critical edition of the Op. 18, automatically giving this edition a more reliable basis than the Complete Edition. […] As with his previous Beethoven editions, Del Mar provides the user with an extensive description and evaluation of all sources (including unimportant ones) and a painstakingly detailed catalogue of variant readings. […] He conscientiously describes in this way how he has arrived at his editorial decisions, and even presents possible alternative interpretations for discussion. This gives the good feeling of having a really carefully crafted edition in the hand. It will probably quickly supplant the old edition.
