  • Barenreiter Bach – Orchestral Suite in B minor, BWV 1067 [Pocket Score] Βιβλίο για σύνολα

    J.S. Bach’s four Orchestral Suites belong to that select group of works one could truly call classical hits! They stem from Bach’s extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in 1721.Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig. These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the “ New Bach Edition”.At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Bärenreiter’s new edition of Bach’s great four suites now presents the Urtext as found in the “ New Bach Edition” i.e. without emendations and performance suggestions. The orchestral parts have been re-engraved and the material includes an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 including a “Violino concertato” part.

  • Barenreiter Glazunov – Concerto in E-flat major, Op.109 for Alto Sax & String Orchestra Βιβλίο για σύνολα

    The Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra is Alexander Glazunov’s last work; since its first performance in 1934 it has become part of the standard saxophone repertoire. The sole surviving autograph manuscript is the hand-written dedication score given by Glazunov to Sigurd Raschèr (Raschèr was the founder and leader of the well-known and innovative Raschèr Saxophone Quartet).This score contains the original version of the work without the alterations which were made in the proofs to the orchestral score as well as the full version of the composer’s cadenza which was later shortened. The autograph manuscript also contains some performance markings by Raschèr.The correspondence between Raschèr and Glazunov documents the composer’s thoughts on the work and his recommendations about the size of the accompanying string orchestra.     This edition of Mozart’s Sonata for bassoon and violoncello K. 292 (196c) pursues an innovative concept: not only does it reproduce the obbligato parts in a strict observance of the “Urtext” of the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe, but it also adds a new dimension of sound to the interpretation of the work by providing an additional piano part that is wholly in keeping with the thoroughbass practice which was still very much alive in Mozart’s day.

    Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor, Op. 104, isundoubtedly one of the mostpopular works from the worldwide cello repertoire, and it is the lastcomposition by Dvorak (1841-1904) written in America during his three-year stay when he workedas thedirector of the National Conservatory of Music in New York (1892-1895). Thecomposerwas not particularly fond of the cello as a solo instrument because he wasconvinced itcould only sound wonderful in the orchestra or chamber ensemble, since only itsmiddlepitch was refined (as he once commented: ‘up there it mumbles and down there itrumbles’),yet it is interesting to note that he wrote this concerto for the cello, apiece sincerely andunreservedly admired by artists and audiences the world over. This title is acritical editionbased on the composer’s manuscript and is part of the first Complete CriticalEdition ofWorks by Antonin Dvorak. Only exceptionally does this edition use a more modernmethodof cello notation for direct transition from bass to treble clefs – in thesecases the cellosounds the way it is written. For this edition the composer’s adaptation forpiano wassupplemented and revised by Karel Solc. The violoncello part is published in arevisionby Ladislav Zelenka, former member of the famous Bohemian Quartet.

    Debussy’s “Sonata for Violoncello and Piano” was written in the summer of 1915; it was the first of a planned series of six sonatas for various instruments, of which Debussy finally only completed three. Due to its unmistakable charm, this work established itself as a standard work in the repertoire from the first performance and is undoubtedly the most frequently performed cello sonata of the 20th century.
    Regina Back’s Urtext edition includes for the first time sketches by Debussy from a private collection, which not only contain an important comment by the composer regarding the balance of the instruments, but are also used to clarify some musical contradictions in the autograph and first edition.
    The Urtext edition by Bärenreiter is accompanied by a foreword (German / English / French), which not only deals with the genesis and the first performances of the composition, but also contains information about practical performance aspects.     The French cellist Felix Battanchon (1814-93) was principal cellist in the orchestra at the Grand Opéra in Paris . Very little research has been carried out into his biographical details, but it is known that he composed around 40 works. By far the majority of his compositions are salon pieces for one to three cellos, but Battanchon also wrote several collections of studies. The “12 Etudes in the Thumb Position” are now available in a new edition by Martin Rummel.     The oratorio ”The Creation” represents not only a crucial point in Joseph Haydn‘s compositional output, but at the same time, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the oratorio.
    The oratorio ”The Creation” represents not only a crucial point in Joseph Haydn‘s compositional  output, but at the same time, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the oratorio. At the turn of the 19th century, Haydn broke with the traditional dominance of the arias, giving the  chorus a distinctly greater significance. This opened the way for a new kind of choral oratorio  which became one of the standard features of developing bourgeois concert life.
    The plot is divided into three parts:
    Part One portrays the first four days of creation with the  genesis of the world, the plants and the firmament, and in Part Two the animals are included.  Part Three takes as its theme the life of the first people, Adam and Eve, with the oratorio  culminating in two major closing choruses of praise and thanks. The text, translated from the English original by Baron van Swieten, Prefect of the imperial court library in Vienna, combines  prose texts of the creation story in Luther’s translation of the bible with complementary excerpts from John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” (duration: approx. 110 mins).

  • Barenreiter Mozart – Two Duos for Violin and Violoncello Βιβλίο για σύνολα

    In the 25 years following Mozart’s death an enormous amount of his music was arranged and adapted for the insatiable appetite of the European musical public. Nearly every major work was arranged for piano four hand, even some of the operas were arranged for string quartet or other chamber scoring. Two new Bärenreiter publications turn back the time and offer us an insight into performance practice of the early 19th century; music meant to be played! The arrangements are of highly popular Mozart chamber compositions, the Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet K. 581 in an anonymous arrangement from 1809 for Clarinet (or Violin) and Piano as well as Mozart’s two duos for Violin and Viola K. 423-424 arranged by Johannes Traeg in 1805 for Violin and Violoncello. The “Grande Sonate” for Clarinet (or Violin) and Piano, published by Artaria, is an early arrangement of a Mozart work of which no autograph exists. The editor, Christopher Hogwood, weaves together the patchwork of sources for the quintet , justifying this arrangement for clarinet and piano as a serious source for the work. Johannes Traeg , an acquaintance of Mozart’s and a publisher, quickly responded to the public demand for domestic Mozart arrangements at the start of the 19th century.
    His arrangements of the Violin – Viola duos K. 423-424 for Violin and Violoncello, published in 1805, are a response to the need for a more active cello part in chamber music.
    Dietrich Berke, editor of the “New Mozart Edition” and editor of the NMA volume containing the duos, clearly shows the path from the Mozart autograph to the arrangement and offers us an informative preface on the duos and their place in domestic music making at the turn of the 19thcentury.   • Barenreiter Smetana – Macbeth for Piano Βιβλίο για πιάνο

    Smetana’s piano sketch Macbeth, also known as Macbeth and the Witches, after William Shakespeare’s tragedy, originated in 1859 while the composer was living in Sweden. Some scholars believe that it was meant to be scored for full orchestra. The work’s dark and gloomy mood is connected with the death of Smetana’s wife Katharina on 19 April 1859. Macbeth only appeared in print posthumously in 1912. It soon entered the piano repertoire, and in the course of the 20th century it was scored for orchestra by Otakar Jeremiáš and for piano and orchestra by Jarmil Burghauser. Our Urtext edition proceeds from the only surviving source, Smetana’s pencil sketch. The editor has added as little as possible to the musical text in order to faithfully recreate the challenge of performing a sketch. Missing rests and rhythmic ‘anomalies’ have been left as in the autograph.
