Universal Edition Bohm – Fantasy On A Theme From Schubert, Op.21 Βιβλίο για φλάουτο και πιάνο
Theobald Böhm (1794-1881) not only contributed to the evolution of flutemaking by constructing his Böhm flute, but also added to flute Iiterature by composing numerous etudes, cancertos and recital pieces. One of the favourite kinds of virtuoso instrumental concert pieces in the 19th century was the fantasy or set of variations on well-known opera melodies or folksongs. Oddly enough, the first edition on which our new edition is based has the title Fantaisie sur un Air de Beethoven (!). This was obviously a lapse in the composer’s memory, since the melody is clearly the Trauerwalzer Op. 9 by Franz Schubert, which also inspired Franz Liszt – among others – to write a grandiose set of variations.

The present booklet contains a collection of pieces from the chorale literature of the Renaissance period and is intended for group instruction. Concerted vocal music is particularly well suited for the flute ensemble, since when playing the flute the melodic quality is -similar to singing- essentially based upon breathing. This enables the flutist to maintain a natural flow during his performance. Since there is very little original literature for the flute ensemble, a pedagogue is often required to draw on arrangements in which the lowest voices are frequently comprised of non-flute accompanying motifs. In chorale music, all voices are equally employed in a voice-leading manner.
The phrasing slurs depend upon the text. The breathing signs in some cases only serve to clarify the musical line in general and are not to be used for strong breathing.
The arrangements are created for flute ensembles with three or four voices. In each case the lowest voice can also be performed with an alt flute as an alternative. An according part attached to the edition.

**Clear the stage for the children! – Playing music together is fun!** Good ensemble-playing, however, must be learned at an early age. This series has been designed to support those music teachers who want to develop the ensemble-playing skills of students at an early phase. Pieces have been carefully selected in order to appeal to young students and foster their enthusiasm for ensemble-playing. The arrangements are attractive and – since none of the parts are monotonous – provide incentive for students to practice at home. in order to accommodate individual needs, the arrangements allow a wide a variety of instruments. The first and second parts can be played by any number and combination of recorders, flutes and violins. The piano part has been kept at same technical level as the other instruments, allowing young pianist the same ensemble possibilities that are enjoyed by other instruments. Bassoon and/or cello and/or string bass can all play the bass voice. Finally, the percussion part has been kept simple enough so that all instrumentalists can take their turns at it. It has been our experience that the playing of new instruments enhances most students’ musical enjoyment. Imaginative texts that link the musical numbers to each other have been included. They can be read between the individual pieces. in short, everything that is necessary for a successful performance has been included.

At a recital, naturally, this order should not be maintained; it would be more to the point if the pieces selected for performance were arranged into one or more (related) series and the pieces within each series played ‘attaca’. The edition includes examples of such grouping arrangements.

“Spiegel im Spiegel” is one of the purest examples of Arvo Pärt’s late compositions in “tintinnabuli style”. It is made up of a melody line together with a tintinnabuli voice that is limited to notes of a tonal triad. This creates a dialogue of voices that mutually pervade each other like one single instrument. Pärt’s music may look simple from the score. In fact it is not that easy to give this piece the right degree of inner sensation.
