Liszt’s reputation as perhaps the greatest pianist of all time is powerfully supported by his dazzling body of work for solo piano. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the romantic repertoire.This superbly produced yet inexpensive two-volume edition presents all of Liszt’s etudes as edited by the great pianist, composer, and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Härtel in Leipzig in 1910–11.This first volume, Series I, includes many of Liszt’s most inspired piano works. The Etude en 12 Exercises and the 12 Grandes Etudes can both be regarded as early versions of the Etudes d’ Exécution Transcendante (Transcendental Etudes). Each set is a highly successful work in its own terms, and both generally surpass the famous final version in difficulty. The separate “Mazeppa” is yet another working of one of the etudes from these sets. The individual etudes range dramatically in style from the delicate refinement of “Feux Follets” to the startling bravura of “Wilde Jagd” (both from the Transcendental Etudes). Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality.

The present volume reproduces — directly from an authoritative Russian edition — the famous cycle of solo piano works that comprises a summa of Liszt’s pianistic achievement, representing the maturation of his style over a period of decades. The Années de Pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) consists of the Première Année(Suisse); DeuxiemeAnnée (Italie) — including the formidable “Après une lecture du Dante” — and its supplement, Venezia e Napoli; and Troisième Année. Also included in this volume are a number of related pieces: “Lyon,” from Album d’un voyageur; the three pieces called Apparitions; the original version of Venezia e Napoli. In addition, new English translations of the Russian footnotes and of the editor’s preface have been provided. Printed in a sturdy, attractive, and inexpensive format, this rich cycle of masterly works for solo piano belongs in the library of every serious pianist or music lover.

‘The Planets’, originally a suite for Orchestra, was composed between 1914 and 1916 by Gustav Holst. Holst was always interested in astrology and therefore was inspired to take the seven planets of the solar system to create a suite. Themes like ‘Mars, the bringer of war’ and ‘Venus, the bringer of peace’ are on the one hand proof that Gustav Holst partially also considered the mythological features of the Gods and Goddesses. On the other hand these themes show that ‘The Planets’ was created under the impression of World War I.
This edition of ‘The Planets’ is an edition for Piano solo. The editor Katsuma Nakajima set a high value on feeling the orchestral power in the edition for Piano as well. The piano version is therefore similar to the original version and contains as well all seven themes.
The seven themes are:
‘Mars, the bringer of war’, ‘Venus, the bringer of peace’, ‘Mercury, the winged messenger’, ‘Jupiter, the bringer of jollity’, ‘Saturn, the bringer of old age’, ‘Uranus, the magician’ and ‘Neptune, the mystic’.
