  • G. Henle Verlag Bach – Chromatische Fantasie und Fuge d-Moll BWV 903 und 903a

Bach’s Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue BWV 903 and 903a is one of his most fascinating works. It was apparently already greatly admired during his lifetime, for it survives in numerous copies which present some occasionally very different versions, especially in the Fantasy. Bach seems to have revised it several times; since there is no extant autograph, one of these divergent versions of the Fantasy has been reproduced in the Appendix of the Henle Urtext edition.

  • G. Henle Verlag Mozart W.A. – Piano Sonata In F Major Kv 280

The Six Sonatas K. 279–284 were probably written around the beginning of 1775. Mozart refers to them in letters that he sent to his father from his trip to Paris (1777–79). in these letters he often refers to them as the “difficult sonatas” – probably alluding to the special interpretative demands. He thus provided these works with rich dynamic and articulative markings, advising a reserved tempo for their performance. Sonata K. 280, has a special place amongst the early sonatas due to its melancholy middle movement in f minor.

  • G. Henle Verlag Beethoven – Piano Concerto Op.61a

Very few musicians are aware of the fact that Beethoven arranged his violin concerto also as a piano concerto. It is only recently that some pianists have discovered this truly rewarding work. Clementi, the London composer and publisher, had heard about the première of the violin concerto and probably sensed its potential. He asked Beethoven for a piano version, which was actually also published in 1808, at the same time as the original. Several important cadenzas had been specially composed for it- the one for the first movement is accompanied by the timpani a unique and original touch! Our edition (piano reduction and study score) contains the text from the recently published volume in the Complete Edition of Beethoven’s Works.

  • Barenreiter Skrjabin – Complete Piano Sonatas II

Piano works were at the centre of Alexander Skrjabin’s compositional output. As an outstanding pianist, he began writing mainly miniatures for his instrument in the style of Romantic piano pieces. But it was also Skrjabin who, unlike any other composer of his generation, contributed to the continuation of the sonata tradition. Particular milestones in his output were Sonatas nos. 4 and 5 of 1903 and 1907, in which we hear forms and harmonies not heard previously. When these works are occasionally given the name “Poème” Sonatas, this indicates that they stem from the time and allude to the compositional context of Skrjabin’s daring orchestral works ‘ Le Divin Poème ‘ and ‘ Le Poème de l´exstase ‘.The editor Christoph Flamm is an expert in Russian music, particularly piano music. His research, for example, into Nikolai Medtner and the editions based on these findings, are regarded as standard works. For his Bärenreiter edition of Skrjabin’s Sonata no. 5, Christoph Flamm has drawn on sources which were until recently regarded as lost or could only be consulted with great difficulty.

  • Barenreiter Skrjabin – Complete Piano Sonatas I

The piano sonatas are regarded as the central works of Alexander Skrjabin’s compositional output. No other composer after Beethoven reshaped this genre so radically, thereby reinvigorating the tradition of the sonata. Skrjabin’s desire not simply to continue the existing tradition, but to surpass it, is evident as early as his first sonatas. These are exciting works from the pianist’s perspective and in their abundance of expression and wealth of imagination. Up to the third sonata Skrjabin developed a distinctive feeling for structural coherence and cyclical unity which at the same time revealed poetic qualities. This volume contains the earlier works; sonatas officially published during the composer’s lifetime as No. 1 op. 6, No. 2 (Sonate-Fantaisie) op. 19 and No. 3 op. 23 as well as the sonatas written during his youth, in G-sharp minor (1886) and E-flat minor (1887-89). The edition also includes the virtually unknown fragment of a sonata in C-sharp minor (1887) and the reconstructed parts of a sonata in G-sharp minor (1892) never previously published. The editor Christoph Flamm draws on autograph manuscripts, first printed editions and on Russian editions of the 1920s. For the first time the recordings of Sonatas nos. 2 and 3 which Skrjabin made in 1908 on paper rolls for the Hupfeld company, Leipzig are also taken into account.
