Some of Mozart’s most enduring and popular music was originally composed for relatively minor occasions — garden parties, weddings, birthdays, home concerts for his friends, and the like. Among these compositions were the multi-movement instrumental pieces he called “serenades.” Written in the 1770s and 1780s, they include such favorite compositions as Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the Serenata Notturna, A Musical Joke, the “Haffner” Serenade, and the “Posthorn” Serenade. This two-volume set contains all of Mozart’s notturnas as well as the complete serenades.

This single volume contains all the string quartets of Mozart: the little-known early quartets in an Italianate manner composed between 1770 and 1773: the six quartets dedicated to Franz Josef Haydn (1782–85); the D Major Quartet (K.499) composed in 1786; and the last three quartets (1789-90) written for the King of Prussia. In addition to the 23 string quartets, the volume contains an alternate slow movement to the G Major Quartet, K. 156.
The music is photographically reprinted from the Breitkopf & Härtel printed score, still considered the standard, authoritative edition for the Mozart quartets.
Noteheads in this edition have been reproduced in a size large enough to be read easily from a music stand or the keyboard, and margins and spaces between staves are conveniently wide to permit written notes, harmonic analysis, fingerings, and running measure numbers. This edition is practical for study, reference, enjoyment — virtually any use.

In the early years of the twentieth century, when vital new forces were revolutionizing the arts, Russian-born Alexander Scriabin (1872–1915) was among the visionary pioneers who sought a new musical language. Scriabin began the process of a complete break with all musical conventions at least a decade before the advances of Stravinsky and Schoenberg. By 1905 he was immersed in a search for a way to express, in sound, his obsession with mystical and theosophical ideals.
Scriabin’s last two orchestral works were the products of a virtual delirium of composing. Simultaneously refining his collection of verses called “Poem of Ecstasy” and the related symphony, Scriabin never forgot the rapture of composing this work about creation and self-fulfillment: “I gasp for breath, but oh, what bliss! The very meter kindles the meaning…”
“Prometheus: Poem of Fire,” Scriabin’s last and most revolutionary symphony, portrays humanity’s epic journey from the beginning of time to the wondrous self-realization that followed the gift of fire and light, which made creative vision possible. Massively scored, “Prometheus” incorporates a “color organ” to bathe the performance space in a vast interplay of colored lights.
For the music professional and every student of composition, orchestration, and conducting, both scores are strikingly original and instructive. Equally fascinating are Scriabin’s approach to composition, the extraordinary sonorities of his orchestra, and his fanciful, often supercharged performance instructions that replace conventional words for tempo, mood, and expression.

It was in his monumental 12 “London” symphonies, composed between 1791 and 1795, that Haydn shaped the early form of the symphony and set the standard for later composers. According to the New Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the appeal of these works stems from their stature as “grand” symphonies, embodying a “broader presentation of musical ideas” and “themes and motifs of a basic simplicity and immediate appeal.”

Two symphonic masterworks employing vast orchestras, one powerfully portraying a day in the mountains, the other Strauss’s day-to-day life at home with his wife, Pauline. Eine Alpensinfonie (1911–15) is nature painting on a grand scale, a magnificent showcase for Strauss’s gifts for sumptuous orchestration. The Symphonia Domestica (1902–3), despite its broad instrumentation, has more of the intimate feel of a chamber work.
