Sikorski Shostakovich – Five Pieces for Two Violins & Piano Βιβλίο για Πιάνο και Βιολί
Delightful is the best way to describe Dmitri Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano (arranged by Lev Atovmian from other works with the composer’s sanction). Rather than Shostakovich’s usual brooding darkness and sardonic wit, these pieces, though never insipid, are filled with warm lyricism and Slavic charm.
Contains the following piecesPrelude (from The Gadfly, Op. 97)
Gavotte (from the 3rd Ballet Suite)
Elegy (from the 3rd Ballet Suite)
Waltz (presumed to be from The Tale of the Priest and His Servant Balada, Op. 36)

Shostakovich did not grapple only once with prelude cycles in the double dozen. The 24 Preludes, Op. 34, adapted for the combination of violin and piano by the young Russian-American composer Lera Auerbach and Dmitri Zyganow, were composed during his earlier years.

Associated Music Publishers Taktakishvili – Sonata for Flute & Piano Βιβλίο για φλάουτο και πιάνο
Otar Taktakishvili (1924-1989) was a Georgian composer, conductor, administrator, and artistic director, who played a leading role in the post-war revival of professional Georgian music. He graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory in 1947, having composed the official anthem of the Georgian Republic while still a student, and before long he became a professor there. Later in his career, he was Chairman of the Georgian Composers’ Union and Minister of Culture of the Georgian Republic.
Taktakishvili, like most Georgian composers of his generation, was heavily influenced by local folk music. Georgian choral polyphony is among the oldest in the Christian world, and its distinctive techniques are seen in his lyrical and expressive style.
In the west, Taktakishvili’s best known work is perhaps his Sonata For Flute And Piano in C major. This book contains all three movements and comes with a separate Flute score.

Cambridge University Press Walton Benjamin – Rossini in Restoration Paris 1Βιβλίο Μουσικολογίας – Μουσικής θεωρίας
Best remembered for such light-hearted works as Il barbiere di Siviglia, Gioachino Rossini produced a sequence of large-scale serious French operas after his move to Paris in 1824 which overwhelmed audiences with their musical power, and responded to the French Restoration. Rather than presenting a traditional account of Rossini’s life and works, Benjamin Walton traces instead the shifting patterns of Rossinian criticism from before the composer’s arrival in Paris to the end of the 1820s, outlining a type of musical history that uses immersion in a narrow time period as a way to reconceive the relationships between opera and the wider currents of life outside the opera house. In place of the comic Rossini of later memory, this book argues for a composer whose music resonated with the experience of contemporary life, and was integrally bound up in the struggle to define French romanticism at the time.

Oxford University Press Osborne Richard – Rossini Βιβλίο
Gioachino Rossini was one of the most influential, as well as one of the most industrious and emotionally complex of the great nineteenth-century composers. Between 1810 and 1829, he wrote 39 operas, a body of work, comic and serious, which transformed Italian opera and radically altered the course of opera in France. His retirement from operatic composition in 1829, at the age of 37, was widely assumed to be the act of a talented but lazy man. In reality, politicalevents and a series of debilitating illnesses were the determining factors. After drafting the Stabat Mater in 1832, Rossini wrote no music of consequence for the best part of twenty-five years, before the clouds lifted and he began composing again in Paris in the late 1850s. During this gloriousIndian summer of his career, he wrote 150 songs and solo piano pieces his ‘Sins of Old Age’ and his final masterpiece, the Petite Messe solennelle. The image of Rossini as a gifted but feckless amateur-the witty, high-spirited bon vivant who dashed off The Barber of Seville in a mere thirteen days-persisted down the years, until the centenary of his death in 1968 inaugurated a process of re-evaluation by scholars, performers, and writers. The original 1985 edition ofRichard Osborne’s pioneering and widely acclaimed Rossini redefined the life and provided detailed analyses of the complete Rossini oeuvre. Twenty years on, all Rossini’s operas have been staged and recorded, a Critical Edition of his works is well advanced, and a scholarly edition of his correspondence, including 250previously unknown letters from Rossini to his parents, is in progress. Drawing on these past two decades of scholarship and performance, this new edition of Rossini provides the most detailed portrait we have yet had of one of the worlds best-loved and most enigmatic composers.

Oxford University Press Bray – Creating a Musical School Βιβλίο θεωρίας
This book looks at two years in the life of the UK’s first Specialist Music College – the Northampton School for Girls – and sets the development of this school against what we know about other schools often described as ‘musical’. The author also sets out a wider context of local and national developments in education, and challenges myths about musical children and the idea that some children never succeed in music. This book does not provide easy answers but, in an entertaining and thought-provoking way, challenges the reader to think hard about the issues surrounding music provision in schools and to reflect on and help develop their practice. Foreword by Howard Goodall.

Oxford University Press Wade – Music in Japan & CD 1Βιβλίο Μουσικολογίας – Μουσικής θεωρίας
Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture is one of the case study volumes in the Global Music Series, edited by Bonnie C. Wade and Patricia Shehan Campbell. This volume provides a vivid introduction to the music of contemporary Japan, a nation in which traditional music, Western music, and popular music thrive side by side. This text points out the centrality of Western and Popular musical idioms in Japanese cultural life, exploring how music in Japan has been profoundly affected by the interface with other cultures. Additionally, the text discusses the intertextuality of Japanese music, exploring how familiar themes, musical sounds, and structures have been maintained and transformed across the various traditions of Japanese performing arts through time. The text features eyewitness accounts of performances, interviews with performers, and a 70-minute CD containing examples of music discussed in the text.

If the fingering appears unusual at times, this is eitheir due to the logical desire for a consistent fingering for all scales or is intended to increase the flexibility of the left hand in some particular way.
The scale passages in the higher positions have been included separately to enable the difficulties experienced in playing quick scales over four octaves to be more easily mastered.
It is recommended to vary the exercises by taking four, eight or sixteen notes to a bow.
