CONTENTS
When the young Marlene Dietrich took violin lessons in Dessau from Friedrich Seitz (1848-1918), did she have this concerto in her repertoire? Whatever the case, her career, as we all know, took off on a different slant. But the Student Concerto in G major, op. 13, advanced to become one of the most popular and effective recital pieces for young violinists en route to the great concert stage.
Friedrich Seitz was a concertmaster and violin teacher, first in Magdeburg and later, from 1884, in Dessau. He published his op. 13 concerto in 1893. It is laid out in the conventional three movements: a charming Allegro non troppo poised between concert and salon music, a sentimental Adagio in a minor key, and a merry Rondo in 6/8 metre as a finale. Like almost every work by this passionate music educator, it stands in the facile e brillant tradition, achieving maximum impact with minimum technical demands while adopting the posture of a virtuoso concerto. A solid command of the first position is sufficient for its performance, with good left- and right-hand coordination required in the fast passages. The learner’s technical skills are honed on simple double stops and détaché, legato and elementary spiccato bowing. Typical formal sections, such as a cadenza in the opening movement, and lovely, memorable melodies, call for an imaginative delivery: students learn how much fun it can be to play ‘virtuoso’ music!
This edition appears in the Bärenreiter’s Concert Pieces series, which includes popular concertos and concert pieces for young violinists. The editor is the internationally acclaimed violin teacher Kurt Sassmannshaus, who has added fingering and bowing to the solo part and explains the technical requirements in a short preface.

G. Henle Verlag Mendelssohn – Variations Op.17 for Piano & Cello Βιβλίο για τσέλο
Besides two genuine cello “hits” from the pen of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy — the “Variations op. 17” and the “Song without Words op. 109” — this urtext edition contains a little sensation: the publication of a delightful and previously unknown original piece for cello and piano. Mendelssohn wrote it down in the album of his friend, the distinguished cellist Julius Rietz, in 1835 while at the pinnacle of his creative powers. All cellists will be happy to welcome this “Album Leaf” into their repertoire.

G. Henle Verlag Dvorak – Waldesruhe Op.68 No.5 Βιβλίο για τσέλο
Dvořák had previously written solo music for Hanus Wihan, later the dedicatee of his cello concerto. When he was planning a trio concert tour for 1892 with Wihan and violinist Ferdinand Lachner and needed further works for cello and piano, he reworked “Silent Woods” for cello and piano during the Christmas holidays of 1891. Originally a four-hand piano piece from his cycle “From the Bohemian Forest”, the cantabile character piece became a popular recital item owing to its sonorous cello sound. Dvořák later arranged it as an effective concert piece for violoncello and orchestra. The first edition of 1894 is the basis for editor and Dvořák specialist Milan Pospíšil’s Urtext edition for violoncello and piano.

Barenreiter Dvorak – Polonaise In A Major for Cello & Piano Βιβλίο για τσέλο
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) wrote the Polonaise in A major for the cellist Alois Neruda , with whom he premiered many of his chamber-music works. The sparkling composition shows that Dvorak, who had been violist in the Prague Provisional Theater , was intimately acquainted with the virtuoso possibilities of the string instruments.
This is a brilliant piece which absolutely should not be missing from the repertoire of proficient cellists.

G. Henle Verlag Debussy Intermezzo-Scherzo for Cello & Piano Βιβλίο για τσέλο
All cellists are familiar with Debussy’s sonata, which he only composed in 1915, three years before his death. Debussy had, however, already written two works for violoncello and piano in 1882, when he was only 20 years old. They largely remained hidden from the public eye because the autograph of the “Intermezzo” – the sole source for this work – was inaccessible for decades. Today, Henle Publishers are in the fortunate position of being able to present an Urtext edition of the “Intermezzo”, also including the “Scherzo” that was posthumously published in 1995. The fingerings and bowings were provided by Jeffrey Solow (violoncello) and Eckart Sellheim (piano).
