Breitkopf & Hartel Glinka – Sonata In D Minor for Viola & Piano Βιβλίο για βιόλα
…Glinka’s Sonata for Viola and Piano was written between 1825 and 1828, but remained unfinished; in the present edition it has been completed by Vadim Borisovsky, who has also edited the viola part.
Those sections realised by the editor have been printed in small type.
As Glinka himself realised, the Viola Sonata is the most successful of his pre-Italian compositions; although intended primarily for domestic music-making (Glinka himself played both viola and piano) it contains, to use his own expression, “some quite clever counterpoint.” Free from the Italianate mannerisms which mar some of his larger chamber works, it has a directness and charm which make it an important addition to the viola repertoire.

SCHOTT Henze – Serenade Βιβλίο για βιόλα

In close collaboration with Henze, the arranger Garth Knox created an edition in which the dynamics and phrasing have been made more precise and the notation been optimized. The arranger writes: “I am convinced that this colourful “miniature dance suite” will be a valuable addition to the viola repertoire – and also an important step toward the future for all musicians who want to know what to expect after Bach, Reger and Hindemith.’

The genesis of the Viola Sonata reflects the eventful life of Hindemith in the winter of 1938/39 and owes its completion to Hindemith’s ability to compose even while travelling, especially on trains. Hindemith himself said about his Viola Sonata: ‘… It is a powerful, well-fed piece with durable lining for cold weather. Second movement with a tricky rhythm to which one has to creep up carefully in order to master it. In the last movement which consists of two variations on an already fully developed rondo movement…’ Hindemith shows again the wide range of his compositional and formal brilliance. New edition based on the text of the Hindemith Complete Edition.
