Heinrich Schiff and Joachim Draheim have joined forces to prepare the publication of this key work of the romantic concerto repertoire. The examination and evaluation of the source material were made for the new “cello and piano” edition in 1996. While the renowned soloist gives tips of inestimable value on the interpretation of the violoncello part, the Schumann expert traces the history of the work and the current state of thesources. This edition of Mozart’s piano sonatas has been prepared for practical use. The editor Robert Teichmüller (1863–1939) was a student of Carl Reinecke and worked as a pianist and professor for piano at the Leipzig Academy of Music “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” (at that time Royal Conservatory and from 1924 State Conservatory of Music in Leipzig). Among his students were great names such as Günther Ramin, Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Rudolf Mauersberger. The publication of his instructive editions on Mozart’s and Reger’s piano works testifies to his esteem in musical life at the beginning of the 20th century.With the new printing of Mozart’s piano sonatas, Breitkopf & Härtel offers an insight into the performance practice of around 1900. Since Teichmüller took the musical text of the Urtext edition (Breitkopf & Härtel) and the then current Mozart Complete Edition as a basis marking all his additions, this edition is interesting for pianists not only for educational and interpretative, but also for historical reasons. In addition to fingerings and additional articulations, the musical text also contains examples of the execution of the numerous ornaments.

These six little piano pieces are among Liszt’s best-known works and are comparatively easy to play – a rarity amongst the composer’s often eccentric and virtuosic works. In 1844 Liszt had already begun work on the cycle that was only published in 1850. Although he had the pieces engraved, this version was never actually printed. He replaced no. 3, a precursor to the first Hungarian Rhapsody, with a piece in the style of a nocturne by Chopin (it can occasionally be heard as an encore at piano recitals), and he simplified the remaining numbers. In the second part of our edition we have reproduced the complete early version for the first time.
